Early Life and Musical Start
Brett Yang was born in Taipei, Taiwan, on March 3, 1992. Eddy Chen was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on March 23, 1993. Both of their families moved to Australia when they were young. They settled in Brisbane, Queensland.
Brett and Eddy met as teenagers in a math group after school. They also played together in a youth orchestra. Later, they both studied music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in Brisbane.
Before TwoSet Violin
Before forming TwoSet Violin, both Brett and Eddy had their own musical careers. In 2012, Brett performed a famous violin piece called the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. He also played with different Australian orchestras. Eddy was a finalist in a young musician competition in 2014. He also played with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
TwoSet Violin on YouTube
In 2013, Brett and Eddy started their YouTube channel. They first tried playing pop songs on the violin, but it didn't get much attention. They saw another violinist, Ray Chen, making funny videos. This inspired them to change their style. They started making comedy videos about life as classical musicians and music students. This change made their channel much more popular!
By the end of 2016, Brett and Eddy decided to focus completely on TwoSet Violin. They left their jobs with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
YouTube Milestones and Performances
The TwoSet Violin YouTube channel grew very quickly. In 2018, they received a Silver Play Button for reaching 100,000 subscribers. In 2019, they earned a Gold Play Button for reaching 1 million subscribers. A music radio station, Classic FM, even said TwoSet Violin was one of the "10 ways the 2010s changed classical music forever."
In January 2020, it was announced that TwoSet Violin would be reporters at the Menuhin Competition. This is a big violin competition. However, the competition was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To celebrate reaching 2 million subscribers, TwoSet Violin did a live performance on February 8, 2020. Brett played the solo part of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Eddy played a special version of the orchestra part on his own violin.
In December 2020, the duo took a short break from YouTube. Brett needed to take care of some health issues. They slowly started making videos again in January 2021.
On January 30, 2021, they celebrated 3 million subscribers with another live performance. This time, Eddy played the solo part of Sibelius's Violin Concerto. Brett played the orchestra part on his violin.
Creative Videos and Parodies
TwoSet Violin is known for their creative and funny videos. In August 2022, they released a song with a fictional band called B²TSM. In the music video, Brett and Eddy dressed up as famous classical composers like Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Mozart.
In October 2022, TwoSet released a music video called "Sell Out." It was a funny version of Blackpink's song "Shut Down." Eddy had pretended to be the famous violinist Paganini in an earlier video. He joked about "Shut Down" using only a small part of Paganini's music. Some Blackpink fans didn't realize Paganini was a historical figure. TwoSet later said it was great to help more people learn about classical composers.
On November 16, 2022, to celebrate almost reaching 4 million subscribers, TwoSet Violin performed live again. They played Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto and Bach's Concerto for Two Violins. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra helped them at the Victoria Concert Hall.
In February 2023, they hosted a fun music battle in Singapore. They competed against another popular YouTuber, bassist Davie504. In November 2023, the group was featured on an Australian TV show called Australian Story.
Recent Changes and B²TSM
On October 14, 2024, Brett and Eddy announced they would stop making content as "TwoSet Violin." They deleted most of their Instagram posts. They also took down most of their YouTube videos, leaving only 29 that they thought were their very best. On December 5, 2024, their channel changed its look to match their fictional band "B²TSM." The next day, they posted the first of six farewell music videos as B²TSM.
Later, in a live video, they explained their plan. They wanted their channel to look like they were "teleporting to the B²TSM universe" for these six videos. They thought fans weren't watching their old content anymore. So, they only left up their best videos for new viewers. However, many fans were upset about the missing videos. Because of this, TwoSet Violin decided to put all their old videos back on their channel.
World Tours
TwoSet Violin has gone on several world tours. They used KickStarter to raise money and even performed on the street in Sydney.
In 2017, they raised enough money for their first world tour. They visited 11 cities in 10 countries across Asia and Europe. This included places like Taipei, Helsinki, and Frankfurt. In 2018, they performed in several cities in the United States, such as New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
In October 2019, TwoSet announced another world tour. They planned to visit many places in Oceania, Europe, Asia, and North America. But this tour had to be postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, they held a virtual world tour event on December 28, 2021.
On November 16, 2022, they announced a new world tour for 2023–24. On April 1, 2023, they officially announced the tour on their YouTube channel. They listed 29 cities they would visit, with dates to be announced later.
Videos and Fun Themes
TwoSet Violin creates many different types of videos.
Ling Ling and Challenges
In 2017, they created a funny character called Ling Ling. Ling Ling is a fictional violinist who "practices 40 hours a day." TwoSet described Ling Ling as the "final boss" of violinists. They made up the character from a comedy sketch about a strict "tiger mom" comparing her child to a friend's child.
In 2018, they started a video series called the Ling Ling Workout. In these challenges, Brett and Eddy play classical music with funny handicaps. For example, they might play at double speed, or while dancing, or even while hula hooping! Other famous violinists like Ray Chen and Hilary Hahn have also tried these challenges on their channel.
Other Popular Series
In July 2018, they made a series of videos where they played classical music using rubber chickens. Other popular themes in their videos include:
- Violin charades (acting out words with their violins).
- Trying out different musical instruments.
- Making jokes about violas (a musical instrument similar to a violin).
Another popular video series involves reviewing scenes from movies and TV shows. They watch parts where someone is playing the violin and point out if the performance looks fake or real. On April Fools' Day 2019, they even joked that they found a new violin piece by J.S. Bach!
World Record Challenge
In September 2018, TwoSet Violin made a video reacting to a BBC News story. The story was about the "Fastest Violinist in the World." They challenged the violinist Ben Lee's Guinness World Record claim. They thought his playing was not accurate enough. As a joke, they timed themselves playing random fast notes. Then they pretended they had broken the world record!
Original Music and Films
Besides their usual comedy, TwoSet Violin has also posted original music and short films. These were mainly composed by themselves and Jordon He. In October 2020, they released a video called "Prelude." It was a short piece composed and played by TwoSet Violin and He.
In June 2022, they posted "FANTASIA," a short film written by the duo. It included several pieces composed by them and He. These included 'Prelude' and three new pieces: 'Scherzo,' 'Adagio,' and 'Rhapsody.' The film also featured a guest appearance by young violinist Chloe Chua.
Other Projects
TwoSet Violin also has a clothing line called TwoSet Apparel. They also have a podcast called TwoSet Talks.
