Story of the Tiger Brothers
The movie begins in the 1920s in Cambodia. At this time, France ruled Cambodia. Two adult tigers, a male and a female, meet and become a couple. Months later, they have two adorable male tiger cubs. Their names are Kumal and Sangha.
Separation of the Cubs
One day, while playing, Sangha chases a small civet into its home. The civet's mother chases Sangha up a tree. Kumal then appears and helps scare the civet mother away. Soon, humans arrive at their temple home. The mother tiger tries to protect her cubs. She grabs Sangha and runs to safety. Kumal tries to follow but falls behind. The father tiger appears to defend Kumal. But a hunter named Aidan McRory shoots the father tiger.
McRory is an explorer and hunter. He finds Kumal and starts to befriend him. However, McRory is later arrested for taking old statues from the temple. Kumal is kept by the chief of a Cambodian village. The chief then sells Kumal to a circus. The circus owner, Zerbino, plans to make Kumal a star.
Life Apart
McRory is released from prison by Eugene Normandin, a French administrator. Eugene admires McRory's adventures. McRory stays at Eugene's home. He meets Eugene's wife, Mathilda, and their young son, Raoul.
Meanwhile, Sangha stays in the jungle with his mother. But both are soon trapped by McRory. They are meant to be hunted by a prince. The mother tiger is shot in the ear. She seems dead but then wakes up and runs away. Sangha is then found by Raoul. The boy and the tiger cub become good friends. Raoul's mother has a dog named Bitzy. Bitzy often bothers Sangha.
Kumal lives in a cage at the circus. He is next to an old tiger named Caesar. McRory makes a deal with Zerbino. They plan to kill Caesar and use his skin. This skin will be given to the prince, pretending it's the mother tiger's skin. Kumal takes Caesar's place as the new circus star. McRory makes sure the circus people promise to take good care of Kumal. But the trick with the tiger skin fails. The prince's wife notices the hole is in the wrong ear.
Sangha lives peacefully with Raoul for a while. One day, Bitzy corners Sangha. Sangha attacks Bitzy to defend himself. Raoul's mother gets very upset. She believes Sangha has now "tasted blood." So, Sangha is taken away. He becomes part of the prince's animal collection. There, he becomes known as a fierce animal.
The Reunion
A year later, Kumal is now an adult. Zerbino trains him to do tricks, like jumping through a flaming hoop. The prince decides to hold a big festival. The main event will be a fight between two large animals. Raoul realizes that the prince's tiger is Sangha. His parents had told him Sangha went to a zoo. McRory is not happy about Kumal fighting. He leaves the festival with a village chief's daughter, Naï-Rea.
During the festival, the two tiger brothers are put into a cage. At first, they do not recognize each other. Kumal is scared to fight. But then, after a short struggle, they remember each other! They start to play together, just like they used to. The audience is very amused. The trainers try to make them fight. Saladin, a circus worker, hits Kumal. Sangha attacks Saladin's arm. Zerbino tries to shoot Sangha. He accidentally leaves the gate open. Kumal stops Zerbino from shooting his brother. The two tigers escape through the open gate. This causes a lot of panic among the people.
Freedom and Return Home
After their escape, the two tigers cause some playful chaos. They eat food on a bus and bathe in a woman's home. They scare people and eat meat from a butcher's truck. McRory decides to hunt them down. Kumal shows Sangha how to jump through fire. McRory and the villagers had started fires to corner the tigers.
McRory and Raoul eventually find the tigers. Raoul asks Sangha to promise to stay in the jungle. He tells Sangha to never return to human villages, so he won't be hunted. Raoul kisses Sangha. He removes a diamond necklace from Sangha's neck. The prince had given Sangha this necklace.
McRory watches from a distance. He aims his gun at Sangha. But Kumal appears behind him. McRory puts his gun down. Kumal shows that he remembers the honey sweets McRory used to give him as a cub. McRory apologizes for not having any sweets left. The tigers then head back to their old temple home in the jungle. McRory thinks they are taking a big risk. But Raoul says it's sometimes good to take risks. McRory agrees.
Raoul and McRory watch the two tiger brothers leave. They hope the tigers will find another tiger to teach them how to hunt in the wild. In the jungle, Sangha and Kumal reunite with their mother. They recognize her by the hole in her left ear. Together, all three tigers find peace by a stream in the jungle.
