Tyler Jordon Harvey was born on July 17, 1993. He is an American professional basketball player. Tyler plays for the Illawarra Hawks in Australia's NBL. He mostly plays as a point guard or shooting guard. Before becoming a pro, he played college basketball for the Eastern Washington Eagles. He even led all college players in scoring during his junior year. Tyler graduated from Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California, in 2011.
College Basketball Journey
Tyler Harvey was a very important player for the Eastern Washington Eagles. Their coach, Jim Hayford, said Tyler was the player they were "building their basketball program on."
Leading the Eagles
When Tyler was a junior, he helped his team achieve amazing things. The Eastern Washington Eagles won a school record of 26 games. They also shared the title for the Big Sky Conference regular season. The team won the Big Sky tournament too. This earned them a spot in the big NCAA Tournament in 2015.
In the tournament, the Eagles were a thirteen seed. They played against Georgetown, a strong fourth seed team. The Eagles played hard but lost the game 74–84. This ended their great season.
Top Scorer in the Nation
Tyler finished that season as the best scorer in Division I college basketball. He averaged 23.1 points per game! He also made the most three-point shots in the whole country. Because of his amazing play, the Associated Press named him an Honorable Mention All-American. He was the first Eastern Washington player to get this honor since Rodney Stuckey in 2007.
Tyler was also named to the Big Sky Conference first-team for the second year in a row. He was also recognized for his good grades, becoming a first-team Academic All-American. He was also part of the Lou Henson Mid-Major All-American Team.
On April 1, 2015, Tyler decided to end his college career early. He chose to enter the 2015 NBA draft instead of playing his final year.
Professional Basketball Career
Tyler Harvey has played for many teams around the world since turning professional.
Starting with the Erie BayHawks (2015)
On June 25, 2015, the Orlando Magic picked Tyler Harvey in the NBA draft. He was the 51st player chosen overall. He then joined the Magic's team for the NBA Summer League. Later that year, he joined the Erie BayHawks. This team was part of the NBA Development League and was linked to the Magic.
Tyler played his first professional game on November 20. He scored 9 points and helped his team with assists and steals. In another game on December 30, the BayHawks were losing by 21 points with only a few minutes left. Tyler made six three-point shots in a row! This amazing effort helped send the game into overtime. The BayHawks ended up winning 125–120.
Playing in Italy and France
In July 2016, Tyler signed with FIAT Torino, a team in Italy's top basketball league. After playing in Italy, he moved to France. In August 2017, he signed with Olympique Antibes, another professional team.
Back in the G League with Memphis (2018–2019)
In July 2018, Tyler's NBA rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. For the 2018–19 season, Tyler played for the Memphis Hustle. This team is the Grizzlies' team in the NBA G League. On February 2, 2019, Tyler made 13 three-point shots in one game! This tied the NBA G League record for most three-pointers in a single game.
Playing in Germany
In July 2019, Tyler signed with Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany's Basketball Bundesliga.
Illawarra Hawks and Cangrejeros de Santurce (2020–present)
In July 2020, Tyler signed a one-year deal with the Illawarra Hawks in Australia. During the 2020–21 season, he averaged 20.4 points per game. He also shot 38% from the three-point line. Because of his great performance, he was named to the All-NBL First Team.
In July 2021, Tyler signed a new three-year deal to stay with the Hawks. In the 2023–24 NBL season, he averaged 15.1 points per game. After the NBL season, he joined Cangrejeros de Santurce in Puerto Rico. In May 2024, he signed another three-year deal with the Illawarra Hawks.
Personal Life
Tyler Harvey met his wife, Haley Stading, at Eastern Washington University. Haley played on the women's soccer team there. They got married in July 2019. They have a son who was born in March 2023.
Tyler and his family even appeared on two episodes of the TV show Family Feud in May 2023.
