Ellen Tyne Daly (born February 21, 1946) is an American actress. She has worked for over 60 years in movies and theater. Tyne Daly has won many important awards, including six Emmy Awards for her TV work and a Tony Award for her stage performances. In 2011, she was added to the American Theatre Hall of Fame.
Tyne Daly started her acting career in New York in summer plays. Her first show on Broadway was That Summer – That Fall in 1967. She is very well known for playing Detective Mary Beth Lacey in the TV show Cagney & Lacey (1982–88). For this role, she won four Emmy Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series. She also won Emmys for her roles in Christy (1994–95) and Judging Amy (1999–2005).
On Broadway, she starred in the musical Gypsy (1989). This role earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She was also nominated for Tony Awards for her roles in Rabbit Hole (2006) and Mothers and Sons (2014). She played Maria Callas in the play Master Class on Broadway and in London.
Tyne Daly's first movie was John and Mary (1969). She is also known for her roles in The Enforcer (1976), Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015), and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). She was nominated for an award for her part in the movie A Bread Factory (2018). She also appeared as Anne Marie Hoag in Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

Early Life and Education
Tyne Daly was born in Madison, Wisconsin. Her father, James Daly, was an actor, and her mother, Mary Hope (née Newell), was an actress. Her family has roots in Ireland. Her younger brother, Tim Daly, is also an actor. She has two sisters named Mary Glynn and Pegeen Michael.
She grew up in Rockland County, New York. She began acting in summer plays with her family. She earned her acting union card when she was 15 years old. She studied at Brandeis University and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
Acting Career Highlights
Early Roles: 1967–1980
Tyne Daly's first Broadway play was That Summer, That Fall in 1967. It did not run for very long.
She appeared in movies like John and Mary (1969) and The Enforcer (1976). In The Enforcer, she played Inspector Kate Moore, the first female partner for Dirty Harry. While some critics did not like the movie, it was very popular. Some people thought Daly's acting was too "mannered," but others liked how strong she made the character. The idea of a male and female police team was later used in the TV show Hunter.
Becoming a Star: 1981–2005
Tyne Daly became very famous for her role as Mary Beth Lacey in the CBS police drama Cagney & Lacey. Mary Beth Lacey was a married working mother. Daly won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series four times for this role. She won in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1988. She and her co-star, Sharon Gless, won this Emmy award six years in a row.
In 1988, Daly sang a duet with Dolly Parton on Parton's TV show Dolly. A Broadway producer saw her performance and decided to bring back the musical Gypsy with Daly playing the main role of Rose. Cagney & Lacey had just finished, so Daly agreed. The Gypsy revival toured the U.S. in 1989 before coming to Broadway. Tyne Daly won the 1990 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her amazing performance in Gypsy.
In 1991, Daly appeared on her brother Tim's TV show Wings. She played a woman who dated Brian Hackett. She also acted in the Broadway play The Seagull in 1992.
She played social worker Maxine Gray in the CBS drama Judging Amy, which ran from 1999 to 2005. Maxine Gray was the mother of the show's main character. Tyne Daly said she learned a lot from social workers to help her play the role better. She also appeared in the TV movie Undercover Christmas in 2003. Later, in 2010, Daly worked with her Cagney & Lacey co-star Sharon Gless again on the show Burn Notice.
Back to Broadway: 2006–Present

Tyne Daly returned to Broadway in the play Rabbit Hole (2006). She played the mother of the main character. She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for this role. In 2009, she was part of the first cast of Love, Loss, and What I Wore. She also performed a cabaret show called Second Time Around in 2010.
During this time, she took on several TV roles. She played Mabel Dodge Luhan in the movie Georgia O'Keefe (2009). She also appeared in an episode of Grey's Anatomy in 2009 and Burn Notice in 2010. She starred as Maria Callas in the play Master Class on Broadway in 2011. She brought this role to London's West End in 2012. In 2014, she guest-starred in the TV show Modern Family.
Tyne Daly also took on supporting roles in movies. These included Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015), Basmati Blues (2017), and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). She had a small role in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). In 2018, she had a main role in the films A Bread Factory Part 1 & 2. That same year, Daly joined the TV show Murphy Brown, playing the character Phyllis. She also guest-starred in Grey's Anatomy (2019), Madam Secretary (2019), and Mom (2021). In 2024, she was going to return to Broadway in the play Doubt, but she had to withdraw due to a hospital stay.
Public Image
Tyne Daly is seen by many as a feminist icon. This is especially because of her role as Detective Lacey in Cagney and Lacey. Her character showed a female detective at a time when this was new on TV. The show also focused on Lacey's work life, not just her home life. Daly has also spoken about letting herself age naturally. For example, during her time on Judging Amy, her hair was its natural gray color.
Personal Life
Tyne Daly was married to Georg Stanford Brown from 1966 to 1990. They have three daughters, including actress Kathryne Dora Brown.
