James Timothy Daly (born March 1, 1956), known as Tim Daly, is an American actor and producer. He is famous for his role as the pilot Joe Hackett on the TV show Wings. Many people also know him as the voice of Superman in Superman: The Animated Series and other animated movies.
Daly also starred in the medical drama Private Practice as Dr. Pete Wilder. From 2014 to 2019, he played Henry McCord on the show Madam Secretary. His co-star on that show was Téa Leoni, who played the Secretary of State.

Early Life and Education

Tim Daly was born in Manhattan, New York City. He was the youngest of four children and the only son. His father, James Daly, and his mother, Mary Hope Daly, were both actors. His older sister, Tyne Daly, is also a famous actress.
Growing up in an acting family, Daly got an early start on stage. He first acted when he was only seven years old. When he was ten, he appeared on TV with his father. As a teenager, he thought about a career in sports or music. But he eventually decided to follow his family and become an actor.
After high school, Daly went to Bennington College in Vermont. He studied Theatre and Literature. He graduated in 1979 and moved back to New York to start his acting career.
Acting Career
First Roles
Daly's professional career began in 1978 in a play called Equus. His first major movie role was in the 1982 film Diner. In this film, he acted alongside other young stars like Kevin Bacon and Mickey Rourke.
He continued to work in movies and on television. He also performed in many plays. For his role in the Broadway play Coastal Disturbances, he won a Theatre World Award in 1987.
Television Stardom
In 1990, Daly became a household name when he starred in the NBC sitcom Wings. The show was about two brothers, Joe and Brian Hackett, played by Daly and Steven Weber. They ran a small airline in Nantucket, Massachusetts. The show was very popular and ran for seven years.
During the 1990s, Daly also took on the voice role of Superman for Superman: The Animated Series. His voice became the sound of Superman for a generation of fans. He has voiced the superhero in several animated movies as well, including Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Justice League: Doom.
Later Career
In the 2000s, Daly continued to act in many different TV shows. He starred in a new version of The Fugitive as Dr. Richard Kimble. He also had a memorable role on the hit show The Sopranos, which earned him an Emmy nomination in 2007.
From 2007 to 2012, he played Dr. Pete Wilder on the ABC show Private Practice. From 2014 to 2019, he co-starred with Téa Leoni in the political drama Madam Secretary. He played Henry McCord, the husband of the Secretary of State.
Daly has also worked as a producer and director. He started his own production companies to create movies, TV shows, and plays.
Charity and Activism
Tim Daly is active in social and political causes. He is the president of The Creative Coalition, a non-profit group of people from the entertainment industry. The group uses its fame to support arts and education programs.
Daly has also worked to support children's safety programs. In 2008, he was an ambassador for Lee National Denim Day. This is a fundraiser that supports breast cancer research. He believes in using his position to help make a positive change in the world.
Personal Life
In 1982, Daly married actress Amy Van Nostrand. They have two children, a son named Sam and a daughter named Emelyn. Both of their children have also appeared in acting roles. Daly and Van Nostrand divorced in 2010.
Daly began dating his Madam Secretary co-star, Téa Leoni, in 2014. They got married on July 12, 2025.
In his free time, Daly enjoys adventure. In 2012, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.
