Early Life and Learning
Georg Stanford Brown was born in Havana, Cuba. His parents were immigrants from Jamaica. When he was seven years old, his family moved from Havana to Harlem, New York. At age 15, he started a singing group called 'The Parthenons'. They even appeared on TV once before breaking up.
Brown left high school early. At 17, he moved from New York to Los Angeles. After a few years, he decided to go back to school. He passed his college entrance exam and was accepted into Los Angeles City College. He chose to study Theater Arts, thinking it would be easy. However, he really enjoyed it! He then moved back to New York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. To pay for his studies, he worked as a school janitor.
Starting His Acting Journey
Brown says he just "fell into" acting. Six months after finishing school, he performed in Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival. This festival is now known as Shakespeare in the Park. His next big role was in the film The Comedians (1967). In this movie, he acted alongside famous stars Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
His work then took him on a journey to Africa for over four months. After that, he traveled to Paris and then to Southern France. There, he met Alex Haley, who was on his way to Africa to work on a story. This story later became the famous miniseries Roots.
Acting and Directing Career
During the 1960s, Brown appeared in several films. These included The Comedians (1967), Dayton's Devils (1968), and Bullitt (1968). In the 1970s, he was in movies like Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) and The Man (1972). He also starred in Wild in the Sky (1972), where he played an anti-war character.
A very important role for Brown was playing Tom Harvey in the 1977 TV miniseries Roots. Tom Harvey was the son of Chicken George and a great-grandson of Kunta Kinte. Brown also appeared in the follow-up series, Roots: The Next Generations, in 1979. In 1980, he starred in the TV movie The Night the City Screamed. He also appeared in the movie Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. Later, in 1984, he played Lew Gilbert in the TV movie The Jesse Owens Story. He also had a supporting role in the miniseries North & South in 1985.
While Brown was still acting on The Rookies, a producer named Aaron Spelling suggested he try directing. Brown directed four episodes of The Rookies. After the show ended, Spelling hired him to direct eight more episodes for other TV series he was producing.
In 1986, Brown won a special award called a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. He won it for directing the final episode of season 5 of Cagney & Lacey. His directing career continued with the television film Alone in the Neon Jungle in 1988. He also directed several episodes of the TV series Hill Street Blues.
Brown also acted in the comedy movie House Party 2 in 1991. From 1998 to 2000, he was a regular on the Showtime TV show Linc's.
