Tyrone is a small, quiet place in Anderson County, Kentucky. It's sometimes called a ghost town because not many people live there anymore. You can find it east of Lawrenceburg, right by the Kentucky River.

The Story of Tyrone

How Tyrone Got Its Name

The story of Tyrone began around 1868 when a special factory called a distillery opened there. A man named T.B. Ripy bought this factory and made it bigger.

The town itself is named after County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. This is where the Ripy family, who owned the distillery, originally came from. The community was first called Streamville. But later, it was renamed Tyrone, after the distillery got that name in 1883.

In 1905, T.B. Ripy's sons opened another factory, the Ripy Brothers Distillery.

A Busy Past

Before a time called Prohibition, about 1,000 people lived in Tyrone. Prohibition was a period in American history when making and selling certain drinks was not allowed. Because of this, the distillery had to close down.

However, the factory later reopened. Today, it's where a famous product called Wild Turkey (bourbon) is made.

The Post Office

Tyrone also had its own post office. It first opened in 1882 and was called "Coke," named after the postmaster at the time. In 1893, its name changed to Tyrone. The post office is now closed.
