Tyronza's Story

Tyronza is one of the oldest cities in Poinsett County. It started in the late 1800s.

The Southern Tenant Farmers Movement

In the 1930s, Tyronza became famous for the start of the Southern Tenant Farmers movement. This movement was a national effort to fight against unfair treatment. Wealthy landowners were treating sharecroppers, many of whom were African-American, very badly.

Today, there is a museum in Tyronza run by Arkansas State University. It teaches visitors about how these tenant farmers organized. They worked together to get better prices for their crops and improved living conditions. The museum also shares the history of the entire region.

Dr. L. H. McDaniel: A Special Doctor

Tyronza was also home to Dr. L. H. McDaniel. He was a local doctor who became good friends with President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Dr. McDaniel was involved in politics and advised President Johnson. He also worked with U.S. House Chairman Wilbur D. Mills to help create the Medicare and Medicaid programs in 1965. These programs help people get healthcare.

Dr. McDaniel cared for patients all over eastern Arkansas. He treated everyone, even if they could not pay him with money. Sometimes, people would pay him with live chickens, baked goods, or vegetables from their gardens. He even made house calls! Dr. McDaniel was a national delegate for the Democratic Party in the 1950s. He brought important political and medical leaders to Tyronza for big conferences held in huge tents.

Tyronza Today

Tyronza began as a farming and shopping center for the county. Now, many people who live in Tyronza work in bigger cities like Jonesboro or Memphis. They choose to live in Tyronza because they like the quiet, small-town lifestyle.
