Tíjola is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Almería province of Spain. It's part of a larger region called Andalusia. Tíjola is surrounded by other towns like Lúcar, Armuña de Almanzora, Bayarque, and Serón.

A Look at Tíjola's Past
Tíjola has a very long history. People have lived here since prehistoric times. We know this because old remains have been found in the area.
Ancient Settlements in Tíjola
Long ago, in ancient times, Tíjola was a Phoenician settlement. The Phoenicians were a people from the eastern Mediterranean. They called their colony here Tagilit.
Later, the Carthaginians came to this area. They were interested in the silver found in the region. After them, the Romans arrived. They called the place "Tagili." You can still find signs of three Roman villas (large country houses) around the area.
Tíjola in Muslim Times
During the time when Muslims ruled parts of Spain, Tíjola was an important place. In the 8th century, under Abd al-Rahman I, there was a fortress called Tachola here.
By the 10th century, during the rule of Abd al-Rahman III, this fortress-city was known as "Tájela." Later maps of the Kingdom of Granada showed it as "Texora." After the Christian armies took back the land, it became known as "Tixora."
