A Look at History

How Nursing Education Started at UCLA

UCLA is a big public university in Los Angeles. It was first started in 1919.

Teaching nurses at UCLA began a long time ago, in 1929. Back then, nurses could take special courses. These courses helped them get certificates in public health.

In 1932, a group of public health nurses wanted a special department for nursing. Dr. Elinore Beebe became the first director in 1937. She helped start the Public Health Nursing program.

The 1940s brought many changes and growth. Students could then earn a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1946, the nursing department grew even more.

Creating a School of Nursing

Professor Lulu K. Wolf was asked to help create a nursing school at UCLA. She was a very smart nurse from Vanderbilt University. She had also served in the Army School of Nursing.

In 1949, the leaders of the University of California officially approved the School of Nursing. Professor Wolf became the school's first leader, called the dean.

In 1950, the school opened its first programs. Students could earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in nursing. A year later, they could also get a Master of Science (MS) degree.

During the 1960s, the school worked with many countries. These included places like India, Japan, and Egypt. This led to more students coming from all over the world.

In 1986, the school added a new, higher degree. This was the Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc) degree. The first students for this program started in 1987. Later, the names of the master's and doctoral degrees changed.

In 1993, the school stopped accepting new students for the basic bachelor's program. Instead, they started a "Bridge program." This program helped registered nurses with other degrees get a bachelor's.

In 2006, the school brought back the traditional bachelor's program. They also started a new Master's Entry Clinical Nurse (MECN) program. This program is for people who have a bachelor's degree in a different subject. It helps them become nurses.

The UCLA School of Nursing programs are officially approved. They are recognized by important nursing organizations. This means the education students receive is high quality.

Students learn in classrooms and in real hospitals or clinics. The school also has summer research programs. These programs are for students who want to learn more about nursing research. They help students prepare for a PhD degree.
