The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is a special part of the United Nations. Its main job is to help protect our planet's environment. UNEP works with countries, especially those that are still developing, to create good rules for the environment. It also helps them use practices that keep the Earth healthy for a long time. This idea is called sustainable development.

UNEP started in June 1972 after a big meeting called the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. Its main office is in Nairobi, Kenya. UNEP also has offices in different regions and countries around the world.

What UNEP Does

UNEP helps create important rules and agreements between countries. These rules cover things like how to safely trade chemicals that could be harmful. They also deal with air pollution that crosses borders between countries. Another important area is keeping international rivers and lakes clean from pollution.

Working with Others

UNEP often works with other groups to solve big environmental problems. In 1988, UNEP teamed up with the World Meteorological Organization. Together, they created the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC is a group of scientists who study climate change.

UNEP is also one of the groups that helps manage the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The GEF provides money for projects that protect the global environment.
