Savoia 1908 is an Italian football club from Torre Annunziata, a town in Campania. They currently play in Eccellenza, which is a regional league.

This club is one of the oldest in southern Italy. It was started on November 21, 1908. A group of local business owners, especially from flour and pasta factories, founded it. The team's color is white, which represents flour, a key product of Torre Annunziata at that time.

The club's symbol is a special shield from the Savoy royal family. Savoia 1908 plays its home games at the Alfredo Giraud Stadium. In 1924, they won the championship of Southern Italy. This allowed them to play against Genoa, who were the national champions.

Club History

Early Years: U.S. Savoia to U.S. Torrese

The club began in 1908 as Unione Sportiva Savoia. It was named after the Italian royal family of that time. In 1924, the team reached the Italian Serie A league finals. They lost to Genoa C.F.C. in a close match.

In 1915, the club officially joined the Italian Football Federation. Their first official tournament was the International Cup in Naples in 1916. They finished third in that competition. After World War I, they won a regional championship. In 1920, the Campo Oncino stadium was opened for the team.

Savoia had a very successful period in the 1920s. They won three straight championships in Campania. They also became champions of central-southern Italy. In 1924, they played in the national championship final against Genoa. Northern Italian teams usually beat southern teams easily. However, Savoia made history by drawing 1-1 in the second game. This was the first time a central-southern Italian club avoided a loss against the strong northern champions.

In the 1930s, the club was known as Fascio Sportivo Savoia. They played steadily in Serie C, a professional league. After World War II, the club changed its name several times. It became Football Association Torre Annunziata and then Spolettificio Torre Annunziata. This last name was for a military team.

In 1944, the club had to change its name and symbol due to political reasons. It became Ilva Torrese and then Unione Sportiva Torrese. In 1946, Torrese was promoted to Serie B for the first time. This was the highest level the club had reached. However, the team started to decline. They faced several relegations and eventually went bankrupt in 1955. The Campo Formisano stadium, their home for about 25 years, also closed.

Rebirth of U.S. Savoia

In 1955, a new club started up as Unione Sportiva Savoia 1908. They had to begin in lower leagues like Serie D and Promozione. But they quickly earned two promotions in 1964 and 1965. This brought Savoia back to Serie C, though only for one season.

In 1978, Savoia joined the new Serie C2 division. They played there until 1982. Eight years later, they returned to Serie C2. In the 1994–1995 season, under coach Luigi De Canio, they were promoted to Serie C1 after winning the playoffs.

A big moment came in the 1998–1999 season. With coach Osvaldo Jaconi, Savoia reached the Serie B promotion playoffs. They surprisingly beat Palermo in the semifinals. Then, they won 2–0 against Juve Stabia in the final. This was a derby match between two rival teams.

In the 1999–2000 season, Savoia struggled in Serie B and was relegated. After another tough season in Serie C1, the club faced financial problems in 2001 and was shut down. A club from Naples, Internapoli, then moved to Torre Annunziata. They changed their name to Intersavoia and quickly got promoted to Serie D. After that, they took back the name Savoia.

At the end of the 2008–09 Serie D season, the club was relegated to Eccellenza. However, they were removed from that league the next season.

A.C. Savoia 1908 and Recent Years

In the summer of 2010, the club was refounded as A.S.D. Calcio Savoia. They started again in Promozione. In the 2010–2011 season, they were promoted to Eccellenza Campania. They then changed their name to the current one. The next season, they were promoted again, this time to Serie D.

In the 2013–2014 season, Savoia won their Serie D group and were promoted to Lega Pro. However, they were relegated back to Serie D the following season. In the 2017–2018 season, they won Eccellenza Campania again and were promoted to Serie D. In the summer of 2018, the club was renamed U.S. Savoia 1908.

In 2021, the club moved back to Eccellenza. This happened after they swapped their football title with Giugliano. In November 2022, a group led by Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, Prince of Venice bought the club. He became the new chairman.
