Udenhout is a village in the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant. It is found northeast of the city of Tilburg. The village is also north of Berkel-Enschot and south of the beautiful Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park.
Udenhout used to be its own independent municipality (a type of local government area) until 1997. At that time, it became part of the larger municipality of Tilburg. Another village, Biezenmortel, which was part of Udenhout, joined the municipality of Haaren. When it stopped being independent in 1996, Udenhout had about 9,028 people living there and covered an area of 26.87 square kilometers.
During the fun Carnaval celebrations, Udenhout has a special nickname: "d'n Haozepot."
History of Udenhout
The village of Udenhout was first mentioned in old records in the year 1233. The exact meaning of its name is not fully clear today. Udenhout started as a "linear road village," meaning it grew along a main road. This growth really began in the late 1700s.
Important Buildings in Udenhout
The Catholic Saint Lambertus Church (Sint Lambertuskerk) was built between 1840 and 1841. It was designed in a style called neoclassic, which means it looked back to ancient Greek and Roman designs. The church was made bigger between 1952 and 1953.
Another important building is Huize St Vincentius. This building was moved to Udenhout in 1925 because of a will (a legal document about someone's property after they die). It was used as a rectorate, which is a home for a priest or religious leader. It was expanded between 1927 and 1929. Today, this building is used as an office.
In 1840, the municipality of Udenhout had 2,084 people living there. It remained an independent municipality until 1997. That's when it officially became part of the municipality of Tilburg.
