Haaren (Dutch: [ˈɦaːrə(n)]) is a small town in the southern Netherlands. It is located in the province of North Brabant. Haaren used to be its own municipality, which is like a local government area.

However, things changed for Haaren on January 1, 2021. The municipality of Haaren no longer exists as a separate area. Its land and villages were split up and added to four different nearby municipalities. These new homes for parts of Haaren are Boxtel, Oisterwijk, Tilburg, and Vught. The town of Haaren itself is now part of the Oisterwijk municipality.

About Haaren

Haaren is often called 'The Garden of Brabant'. This nickname comes from the many tree and plant nurseries found there. It's a place where lots of trees and plants are grown.

The former municipality of Haaren was quite interesting. It included the town of Haaren and three other villages. These villages were Helvoirt, Esch, and Biezenmortel.

One special thing about the old municipality was that it belonged to two different regions. These regions were Tilburg and 's-Hertogenbosch. The main village of Haaren was part of the Tilburg region. A large part of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen national park was also within the municipality's borders. This park is known for its sand dunes and forests.

The Villages of Haaren

When the municipality of Haaren was divided, its villages joined new areas. Here's where each village went, along with their populations from 2003:

  • Biezenmortel (1,498 people) became part of the Tilburg municipality.
  • Esch (2,225 people) joined the Boxtel municipality.
  • Haaren (5,584 people) became part of the Oisterwijk municipality.
  • Helvoirt (4,741 people) was added to the Vught municipality.
