Ugashik Bay facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ugashik Bay is a special bay in Alaska, a state in the United States. It's part of the big Bering Sea. Imagine a long, curved shape, a bit like a comma – that's what Ugashik Bay looks like! It's where the Ugashik River flows into a larger area called Bristol Bay, which is on the western side of the Alaska Peninsula. This area is an "estuary," which means it's a place where fresh river water mixes with salty ocean water.

The water in Ugashik Bay is often cloudy and moves around a lot. This happens because of several things: small streams bring mud into the bay, winds blow frequently, and the tides are very, very high. Some tides in Bristol Bay are among the highest in the world, and Ugashik Bay is greatly affected by these powerful ocean movements.

Geography of Ugashik Bay

Ugashik Bay has different types of shores. To the north, there's a sandy beach that stretches from a place called Smoky Point all the way to the wide mouth of Dago Creek. On the east side, the shoreline is made of mud and sand, running straight north and south past the village of Pilot Point to Muddy Point. The southern shore is always changing, with many ridges of mud and sand. The biggest and most noticeable of these ridges is called South Spit.

The bay's influence reaches out into the ocean. It affects a marine zone that goes about 8 miles (13 km) north to Cape Greig and about 12 miles (19 km) south to Cape Menshikof.

Weather in Ugashik Bay

The weather around Ugashik Bay can change a lot, especially in winter. Storms often move through the area, changing how the weather feels.

Winter Weather

When winds blow up from the North Pacific, winter can feel quite mild, almost warm. But if the winds come from the Alaska Interior, it can become very clear and bitterly cold.

Summer Weather

Even in summer, winds blowing off the Bering Sea can bring a lot of moisture and a biting cold. This often comes with low clouds and fog along the coast. This kind of weather is so common that a place nearby was named Smoky Point because of the frequent bad weather.
