Early Life and National Wins
Ugo Frigerio was born in Milan, Italy. He became a very successful race walker in Italy. He won nine national championships in different race walking events. These included the 3 km, 10 km, and one-hour walk races. He was a top athlete in his home country.
Olympic Games Highlights
Ugo Frigerio was known for his unique style during races. At the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium, he had a special request. He gave sheet music to the band playing at the event. During his race, he would even tell the conductor if the music was too fast or too slow! He also chatted with the crowd, who cheered him on.
He won two gold medals at the 1920 Olympics. One was for the 3 km walk and the other for the 10 km walk. He continued his success at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France. There, he won another gold medal in the 10 km walk.
A Break and a Comeback
After the 1924 Olympics, Ugo Frigerio decided to take a break from the sport. This was because race walking was not included in the 1928 Summer Olympics. He thought his career might be over.
However, he started training again in 1931 for the 1932 Games. The only walking event at those Olympics was the 50 km race. This was five times longer than his usual 10 km distance! Despite the challenge, he trained hard and won a bronze medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.
After this, Ugo Frigerio officially retired from competing. He then became involved in sports management. In 1934, he wrote a book about his life called Marciando nel nome dell’Italia. This means Walking in the Name of Italy.
