Ulrich "Uli" Stein (born October 23, 1954) is a famous German former football player. He played as a goalkeeper, which is the player who tries to stop the ball from going into the goal. Between 1978 and 1997, he played in 512 games in Germany's top football league, the Bundesliga.

Playing for Clubs
Uli Stein started his professional football journey in 1978 with a team called Arminia Bielefeld. He played there for two years.
Joining Hamburger SV
In 1980, Uli Stein moved to Hamburger SV, a very well-known club. He stayed with them until 1987. During his time here, he helped the team win some amazing titles.
- In 1982 and 1983, Hamburger SV won the German Bundesliga title. This means they were the best team in Germany.
- The biggest win was in 1983, when they won the European Cup. This is a huge competition for the best clubs in Europe.
- In 1987, they also won the DFB-Pokal, which is Germany's main knockout cup competition.
Time at Eintracht Frankfurt
After leaving Hamburger SV, Uli Stein joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 1987. He played for them until 1994. He became one of the most liked goalkeepers for this club. He also helped Eintracht Frankfurt win the DFB-Pokal in 1988.
Uli Stein was known for being a very passionate player. Sometimes, his strong feelings led to disagreements on the field. For example, in 1987, he had a moment where he reacted strongly towards an opposing player. Because of this, he left Hamburger SV. He also had a similar situation at Eintracht Frankfurt in 1994.
Returning to Former Clubs
In 1994, Uli Stein went back to play for Hamburger SV for one more year. Then, in 1995, he returned to Arminia Bielefeld, the club where he started. He played there until he retired from professional football during the 1996–97 season.
Playing for His Country
Uli Stein also played for the West Germany national team six times between 1983 and 1986.
World Cup Experience
He was part of the West German team that played in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. They made it all the way to the final match, but they were defeated by Argentina.
End of International Career
His time playing for the national team ended after he made a comment about the West German coach, Franz Beckenbauer. Uli Stein later said in his book that he did not mean to insult the coach. He also believed that a sponsor might have influenced why he was not the first-choice goalkeeper.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Uli Stein became a goalkeeping coach.
- In 2007, he became the goalkeeping coach for the Nigerian national team.
- In 2008, he took on the same role for the Azerbaijan national team. He worked there with another German coach, Berti Vogts.
