Ulrike Maier (born October 22, 1967 – died January 29, 1994) was an amazing alpine ski racer from Austria. She became a World Champion two times in the super-G event. Ulrike also competed for her country in the 1988 Winter Olympics and the 1992 Winter Olympics.
Ulrike was born in Rauris, a town in Salzburg, Austria. Her father ran a ski school there, so she grew up around skiing. She won gold medals in the super-G at the World Championships in both 1989 and 1991. In 1991, she also earned a silver medal in the giant slalom event. Ulrike achieved her first of five World Cup wins in November 1992. Throughout her career, she reached the podium 21 times and finished in the top ten 59 times in World Cup races.

Ulrike Maier was a very talented ski racer. She was known for her speed and skill on the slopes. She started competing in the World Cup when she was just 17 years old. Over nine seasons, she showed great improvement and became one of the top skiers.
Her Amazing Ski Career
Ulrike's career was full of exciting moments. She was especially good at the super-G and giant slalom events. These races require a mix of speed and precise turns. Her two gold medals at the World Championships proved she was among the best. She also won five World Cup races, which is a huge achievement.
In the 1993 World Cup season, she finished 5th overall. This was her best overall ranking. She also came in 2nd in the super-G standings that year. Ulrike competed in two Olympic Games. In 1988, she placed 6th in giant slalom and 10th in slalom. In 1992, she improved, finishing 4th in giant slalom and 5th in super-G.
The Accident and Its Impact
Sadly, Ulrike Maier's life ended too soon. Two weeks before the 1994 Winter Olympics, she was racing in a World Cup downhill event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. On January 29, 1994, during the race, her ski caught an edge. This happened at a very high speed, about 105 kilometers per hour (65 mph). She crashed violently and broke her neck.
Ulrike was quickly taken to a hospital nearby in Murnau. However, she died from her injuries shortly after. She was only 26 years old. Ulrike had been thinking about retiring from skiing at the end of that season. But after some recent wins, she was reconsidering and planning to continue.
Her accident was seen live on television, which made it even more shocking. Ulrike left behind her young daughter, Melanie, who was born in 1989. Thousands of people attended her funeral in her hometown of Rauris. Her close friend and teammate, Anita Wachter, wore Ulrike's world championship medals during the procession as a tribute.
After the accident, there was an investigation into what caused the crash. Initially, some thought she hit a wooden timing post. However, a court later found that she likely broke her neck by crashing into a pile of snow at the edge of the race course. The court decided that the race organizers were not at fault.
