Umeå IK started in 1917 as a general sports club. The women's football team began playing in 1985. They started in the Swedish fourth division. In 1986, they won their division and moved up to the third division.
In 1991, the club began paying its players. They paid 35 Swedish kronor per game. They also started training more often than other Swedish teams. This was done to help the team become one of the best in Europe.
Rise to Success
In 1996, the team reached the top league, Damallsvenskan. However, they were moved down to a lower league the next year. In 1998, they were promoted back to the top league. After this, the club had huge success. They won seven Swedish championships in just nine years. These wins were in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
In the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, five players from Umeå IK were on the Swedish national team. This team won a silver medal. In 2004, the famous Brazilian player Marta joined the club. The team did not lose a single game in the 2006 Damallsvenskan season.
Recent Years
After their last championship in 2008, the club faced challenges. Many top players left the team. In 2011, the club had to reorganize to avoid going bankrupt.
However, these changes were not enough. After a difficult 2016 season, the club finished last in the league. They were moved down to the second division. They played in Elitettan for three years. Then, in 2019, they were promoted back to the top league.
In the 2020 Damallsvenskan season, the club finished eleventh. They were moved down again, just one year after returning to the top league. A few days later, their coach, Robert Bergström, left the team.
The team played in Elitettan in the next season. On October 9, 2021, Umeå IK beat IF Brommapojkarna 6–2 at home. This win helped them qualify for the 2022 Damallsvenskan. But on November 5, 2022, Umeå IK was moved down from Damallsvenskan once more.
