Club History
Umeå IK started in 1917 as a general sports club. The women's football team began playing in 1985. They started in the Swedish fourth division. In 1986, they won their division and moved up to the third division. By 1991, the club started paying its players. They also trained more often than other Swedish teams. This was done to help the team become one of the best in Europe.
In 1996, the team reached the top league, Damallsvenskan. However, they were moved down to a lower league the next year. This is called being relegated. In 1998, they were promoted back to the top league. After this, the club had huge success. They won seven Swedish championships in just nine years. These wins were in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
During the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, five players from Umeå IK were on the Swedish national team. That team won a silver medal. In 2004, the famous Brazilian player Marta joined the club. The team had an amazing season in 2006. They did not lose any games in the 2006 Damallsvenskan season.
After their last championship in 2008, the club faced challenges. Many top players left. In 2011, the club had to reorganize to avoid serious money problems. This change was not enough to keep them at the top. After a difficult 2016 season, the club finished last. They were relegated to the second division. They played in Elitettan for three years. Then, in 2019, they were promoted back to the top league.
In the 2020 Damallsvenskan season, the club finished eleventh. They were relegated again, just one year after returning to the top league. A few days later, their coach, Robert Bergström, left the club. The team then played in 2021 Elitettan. On October 9, 2021, Umeå IK won a big game against IF Brommapojkarna. This win helped them qualify for the 2022 Damallsvenskan. However, on November 5, 2022, Umeå IK was relegated from Damallsvenskan once more.
