Uncompahgre County was a special part of Colorado that existed for only a very short time! It was a county, which is like a local area managed by a government. This county only lasted from February 27 to March 2 in 1883. It briefly took the place of another county called Ouray County.
A Very Short History
On February 27, 1883, the people who make laws for Colorado (called the Colorado General Assembly) decided to change the name of Ouray County. They renamed it Uncompahgre County.
The county was named after the Uncompahgre Ute people. They are a group of Ute Native Americans. Just three days later, on March 2, 1883, the lawmakers changed their minds. They decided to change the name back to Ouray County. So, Uncompahgre County was only around for a blink of an eye in history!
