Union Falls: A Yellowstone Wonder

Union Falls is a special kind of waterfall called a fan-type waterfall. This means the water spreads out like a fan as it falls. The water comes from Mountain Ash Creek. This creek is a smaller stream that flows into a bigger river called the Fall River.

How Tall Is It?

Union Falls is very tall! It drops about 250 feet (76 m) down. To give you an idea, that's like falling from the top of a 25-story building! It is the second tallest waterfall in Yellowstone National Park. Only the lower Yellowstone Falls is taller.

How Did It Get Its Name?

The waterfall was named by geologists, who are scientists who study the Earth. They explored the area between 1884 and 1886. A geologist named J.P. Iddings said the name "Union Falls" came from something special. Another small stream joins Mountain Ash Creek right at the very top of the waterfall. This "union" of the two streams gives the falls its name.

How Can You Visit Union Falls?

Union Falls is a bit hidden, but you can reach it! Visitors can get to the falls by hiking along the Mountain Ash Creek trail. You can also get there by using the Grassy Lake Road. It's a great place for adventurers to explore in Yellowstone.
