The Unknown Confederate Dead Monument in Perryville is a special memorial in Boyle County, Kentucky, near Perryville, Kentucky. It stands in a small family cemetery called Goodknight Cemetery, which is on private land. This monument honors Confederate soldiers who died in the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862.

It is believed that the monument was built around 1928, about 66 years after the battle. Many Confederate soldiers died in that fight, but we don't know exactly how many are buried here.

Honoring Unknown Soldiers

This monument is dedicated to soldiers whose names are not known. In the Battle of Perryville, 532 Confederate soldiers lost their lives. The monument serves as a tribute to those brave individuals who fought.

What Does the Monument Look Like?

The monument stands about seven feet (2.1 meters) tall. It is made from a mix of marble and granite. At the very top, there's a fancy, wavy marble cap that is 18 inches (46 cm) tall.

The middle part of the monument is made of granite and is six inches (15 cm) thick. Words are carved into this section, explaining that it honors the many Confederate soldiers buried there whose names are not known. The monument rests on a marble base that is 4 by 2 feet (about 1.2 by 0.6 meters). Even though it's on private land, the United States government was the one who put up this monument.

A Place in History

On July 17, 1997, the Unknown Confederate Dead Monument in Perryville was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of important historical places in the United States. It was one of 60 monuments related to the Civil War in Kentucky that were added at the same time.

Three other monuments from this group are also in Boyle County. Two of them are at the nearby Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site: the Confederate Monument in Perryville and the Union Monument in Perryville. The third one is in downtown Danville, called the Confederate Monument in Danville. Many other memorials in cemeteries honor unknown soldiers, but this monument is unique because all the soldiers buried here are unknown.
