About Unknown Hinson
Stuart Daniel Baker grew up in Albemarle, North Carolina. Before becoming famous as Unknown Hinson, he was a music teacher. He also worked as a studio musician, playing instruments for other artists' recordings.
How Unknown Hinson Began
Stuart Baker created his character, Unknown Hinson, for a TV show called The Wild Wild South. This show was on public-access TV in the Charlotte area. It featured funny skits and music performances.
Baker and his co-star, Don Swan, played the characters Unknown Hinson and Rebel Helms. After Don Swan passed away in 1995, Stuart Baker started a new show. It was called The Unknown Hinson Show. This show was a direct spin-off from The Wild Wild South.
The Unknown Hinson Show became very popular. It won the "Best Of" award from Creative Loafing Charlotte for Best Public-Access Television Show four years in a row! After the TV series ended, Baker kept performing as Unknown Hinson. He played live concerts and released many albums.
His Music Career
Unknown Hinson has performed with many famous musicians. These include artists from the rockabilly, country, and psychobilly styles. Some of the well-known musicians he has played with are The Reverend Horton Heat, Marty Stuart, and Hank III. Hank III, who is the grandson of the legendary country singer Hank Williams, even has a tattoo of Hinson's face on his arm!
For a while, Stuart Baker also played bass and lead guitar in Billy Bob Thornton's band, The Boxmasters. When he played with this band, he used his real name, Danny Baker. He didn't wear his Unknown Hinson costume or makeup. Instead, he wore a vintage 1960s suit.
In 2012, Hinson announced that he would stop touring. He said it was because of the rising costs of traveling and performing. However, after his wife, Margo Baker, passed away, Unknown Hinson started touring again.
Later, in 2020, Baker shared that he would not be playing any more shows. This was due to a health condition called osteoarthritis. In 2023, he shared that he was recovering from two strokes and was doing physical therapy.
Recording His Music
Unknown Hinson writes all of his own music. He also produces all of his recordings himself. His songs often make fun of or comment on parts of modern country music and "redneck" culture. In 2009, his song "Torture Town" won an award. It was named Best Alternative Country in The 8th Annual Independent Music Awards.
Voice Acting Career
Stuart Baker is also known for his voice acting. He provided the voice for Early Cuyler on the Cartoon Network show Squidbillies. Early Cuyler is a character who is a balding hillbilly squid from Georgia. Baker voiced this character for 15 years on the popular Adult Swim program.
