Upper Castra is a small, quiet area in Tasmania, Australia. It's part of the Central Coast region. This area is about 23 kilometers (14 miles) south of the town of Ulverstone. In 2021, only 85 people lived in Upper Castra.
What's in a Name?
The name "Castra" comes from a word that means "camp." Upper Castra got its name because it is further inland, or "upper," compared to the nearby area simply called Castra.
A Look at History
Upper Castra officially became a recognized locality in 1965. A long time ago, in 1890, a post office called Castra Road Upper opened here. It helped people send and receive letters for many years before it closed in 1974.
Where is Upper Castra?
Upper Castra is connected to the coast by Castra Road. This road is also known as State Route B15. It passes through small villages like Sprent and Spalford. Eventually, it leads to Main Road in Ulverstone.
To the east, Upper Castra is bordered by the Wilmot River. This river is important because it helps power the Wilmot Power Station. To the south, you'll find the area of Nietta. To the west are the places called Preston and South Preston.

For a long time, the local school was a very important place for the community in Upper Castra. It was a central spot for everyone.
