The Urban Glass House is a special apartment building in New York City. It was designed by a famous American architect named Philip Johnson. It's located in a part of Manhattan called Hudson Square.
The building was finished in 2006. It was Johnson's very last project, as he passed away before it was completed. The name "Urban Glass House" reminds people of Johnson's earlier, famous Glass House. That original Glass House is in New Canaan, Connecticut. However, the New York City building looks quite different from the first one.
The inside of the Urban Glass House was designed by Annabelle Selldorf. She is an American designer and architect.
Building History
The Urban Glass House project started with a developer named Antonio Vendome. He first asked Philip Johnson to design a building with colorful bricks. This early design was very unusual for Johnson. It did not have straight angles and was not symmetrical. People called it a "living sculpture."
The first plans were for a much taller building, about twenty stories high. But because of city rules, this taller plan could not happen. During the project, Antonio Vendome sold his part to three other developers. These developers asked Johnson to use ideas from his past designs. One idea came from his famous Seagram Building.
Johnson's architectural partner, Alan Ritchie, suggested making the new building a tribute to Johnson's original Glass House. So, the plans were changed to include this idea. After the new design, another company, SLCE Architects, helped finish the building. They stepped in because Johnson was getting ready to retire and later passed away.
Annabelle Selldorf designed the interiors. She also got ideas from the original Glass House. For example, she used a special floor pattern called herringbone. This pattern was similar to the one in Johnson's original house. But instead of brick, she used white oak wood.
What's Inside?
The Urban Glass House is mostly a place where people live. It has forty apartments. Residents can also use bicycle storage and a fitness center inside the building.
On the ground floor, there are shops and a restaurant. This restaurant belongs to Antonio Vendome, who first started the building project.
Some famous people have lived in the building. Marina Abramović, a well-known artist, lived there until 2014. Sol Kerzner, a hotel owner, also owned an apartment in the building.
