Ott was born in Otepää, Estonia. He first appeared on Soviet Channel One in 1986. There, he hosted a show called Television Acquaintance (Russian: Телевизионное знакомство). Later, he worked for Russian Channel One and Estonian ETV. On ETV, he hosted his own show, "Urmas Ott and Others."

A Career in Television

He also interviewed famous ice skater Irina Rodnina. Other guests were artist Ilya Glazunov, actor Chuck Norris, and singer Alla Pugacheva.

His interview style was unique and personal. He usually faced the person he was talking to, not the audience. He once joked that Russian viewers liked him because he was "not one of them and I'm not foreign." This meant he was different enough to be interesting, but not too different to be unfamiliar.
