Uthman ibn Affan (Arabic: عثمان بن عفان) was a very important leader in early Islamic history. He was the third caliph, which means he was a successor to the Prophet Muhammad and a leader of the Muslim community. He is considered one of the four "Righteous Caliphs" in Sunni Islam. Uthman came from a respected family called Ummayyah, part of the Quraish tribe in Makkah. He was one of the few people at that time who could read and write. As he grew up, he became a successful cloth merchant and became very wealthy.
