Discovering Utica's Past
Utica has an interesting past. During the Civil War, a group of soldiers called the 18th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry came near Utica. This happened on Tuesday, July 7, 1863.
A man named Dr. George F. Smith also has ties to Utica. He was one of the first people to sell Coca-Cola in his drug store. He also started the Rosebud Perfume Company in Woodsboro, Maryland. Before all that, Dr. Smith taught school right here in Utica for five years. This was before he became a druggist in 1902.
