The Central Plaza and Its Church
What is a Plaza?
In Puerto Rico, many towns have a special area called a "pueblo" barrio. This area usually has a main square, or plaza. You will also find the town's government buildings and a Catholic church there. This tradition comes from Spain.
The central plaza is a busy place. People gather there for fun events and to meet friends. It is a place for both official celebrations and just hanging out. Old Spanish laws from the 1800s said that plazas should be big enough for many people. They also said that streets nearby should have covered walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
San Miguel Church
Right across from the main plaza is the Church San Miguel Arcángel of Utuado. This is the local Catholic church. The very first church building was made of wood. It opened in 1743. The church you see today was built much later, between 1875 and 1896. This historic church is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important building that is protected.
