Valentine John Bettin (July 8, 1923 – January 7, 2021) was an American actor. He was well-known for always using an English accent in his acting roles. Many people remember him best for his voice work in Disney animated films and TV shows.

He voiced Dr. David Q. Dawson in the 1986 Disney movie The Great Mouse Detective. He also became the voice of the Sultan in the Aladdin sequels, The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves. He continued this role in the Aladdin TV show. Before his famous voice roles, Bettin also hosted The Storyteller, a children's TV show in Chicago during the late 1950s.

Early Life and Acting Career

Val Bettin was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on July 8, 1923. In 1948, he traveled to England to study acting. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, a famous acting school. He graduated from there in 1950. While in England, he met Hildy Pender, and they got married in 1950.

After getting married, Val and Hildy moved back to the United States. Val then became a drama teacher in Iowa. His first movie role was in the 1980 film Somewhere in Time.

He later became a very busy voice actor. His first big voice role was Dr. David Q. Dawson in The Great Mouse Detective. He lent his voice to many other animated projects. These included Shrek, Gargoyles, Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series, and W.I.T.C.H..

Val Bettin himself died in Ventura on January 7, 2021. He was 97 years old. He was buried at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.
