Valdo Cândido Filho (born on January 12, 1964), known simply as Valdo, is a Brazilian former footballer. He played as a central midfielder. Valdo is also a football manager. He used to manage the Congo national football team.

Valdo's professional football career lasted over 20 years. He played in Brazil, Portugal, France, and Japan. He played more than 40 games for the Brazilian national team. Valdo also represented Brazil in two World Cups and two Copa América tournaments.

Valdo's Club Career Highlights

Valdo started his football journey in Siderópolis, Brazil. He began playing with Figueirense Futebol Clube. He then made his professional debut with Grêmio Football Porto-Alegrense. With Grêmio, he won the Campeonato Gaúcho four times in a row.

Playing in Portugal with Benfica

In 1988, Valdo moved to Portugal. He joined S.L. Benfica with his teammate Ricardo Gomes. They both played important roles in Benfica's success. The team won the Primeira Liga championship in Valdo's first season (1988–89). They won it again in 1991. Valdo scored five goals in 26 matches during that 1991 winning season.

Time in France with Paris Saint-Germain

In 1991, Valdo and Ricardo Gomes moved to Paris Saint-Germain F.C. in France. They played there for four years. During this time, they helped Paris Saint-Germain win four titles. This included the Ligue 1 championship in the 1993–94 season.

Returning to Benfica

Valdo returned to S.L. Benfica in 1995. He played 30 league matches in each of his two seasons back with the team. He helped Benfica win the Taça de Portugal in 1996.

Later Career and Management

At 32, Valdo joined J1 League club Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan. After two years, he returned to Brazil. He continued playing until he was 40 years old. He played for six different teams in Brazil during his final years. He finished his playing career after helping Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas return to the top Brazilian league, Série A.

Valdo started his coaching career in 2009. He coached in Brazilian amateur football. In 2014, he became an assistant coach at MC Alger in Algeria. He worked with his former Benfica coach, Artur Jorge. From 2018 to 2021, Valdo managed the Congo national football team.

Valdo's International Career with Brazil

Valdo played 45 games for the Brazilian national team over six years. He was part of the 1986 FIFA World Cup squad. However, he did not play in any matches during that tournament.

In the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, Valdo was a starting player. He played in all four of Brazil's matches. This included their 1–0 loss against Argentina in the round of 16.
