How Vale Summit Got Its Name
People say that Vale Summit got its name in the mid-1800s. It was started by people who worked in coal mines. Before it was called Vale Summit, locals knew it as "Pompey Smash".
This interesting name is believed to have come from a story about a slave named Pompey. The story says he crashed his wagon, which was full of coal. Even today, a main road in the community is still called "Pompey Smash Road".
