A Look Back: Valena's History
How Valena Started
Attala County was created in 1833. Valena was one of the very first places where people settled in this new county.
The town was built on the east side of the Big Black River. It was also on the western part of a large farm owned by S.H. Clark.
What Valena Was Like
Valena became a busy little place where people could buy and sell things. It was a regular stop for large, flat boats called flatboats that traveled on the river.
The very first sawmill in the county was located here. This mill cut wood into planks. Valena also had a blacksmith shop, where metal items were made. There was a saloon, a few stores, and even a post office from 1837 to 1840.
Why Valena Disappeared
For reasons that are not fully known, Valena was left empty before the year 1900. It became a ghost town, with its buildings and businesses no longer in use.
