History of Valencia
How Valencia Got Its Name
Valencia was not always called Valencia! At first, it was known as Brookside. Later, in the 1890s, its name changed to Sunnyside. However, when the railroad came through, they needed to change the name again. There was already a train stop called Sunnyside in another part of Pennsylvania. No one knows for sure how the name Valencia was chosen, but it stuck!
Becoming a Borough
Valencia officially became a borough in September 1896. This meant it could have its own local government. The town chose its first leader, called a burgess (which is like a mayor today), named James Douthett Magee. A group of seven council members also helped run the town. These first council members were Edward Cowan, J. D. Perry, C. F. Harrobin, J. A. Cox, J. C. Barr, P. E. Cooper, and W. J. Craig.
