Valery Kuzmich Nepomnyashchy (Russian: Валерий Кузьмич Непомнящий), born on August 7, 1943, is a famous Russian association football manager and a former player. He is best known for coaching the Cameroon national football team. He led them to the quarter-finals in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, which was a big surprise!
After his time with Cameroon, he coached clubs in Turkey from 1992 to 1994. In 1995, he became the manager of South Korea's Yukong Elephants (now called Jeju United FC). He helped them win the Korean League Cup in 1996. Later, in 2001, he managed J. League club Sanfrecce Hiroshima. He also coached Shanghai Shenhua from 2004 to 2005, leading them to a second-place finish. In 2006, he coached the Uzbekistan national football team. Valery Nepomnyashchy also worked as a football commentator for a Russian TV channel. In September 2008, he signed a two-year contract with the Russian club Tom Tomsk.

Early Life and Beginnings
Valery Nepomnyashchy was born in Altai Krai, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. This was during World War II. His mother moved there from Moscow because his father was killed in the war. In 1947, Valery and his mother moved to what is now Turkmenistan. This is where he started playing football as a young person. He finished his studies at the Turkmen State University in 1969.
Playing and Coaching Career
Valery Nepomnyashchy started his career as a football player. His biggest achievement as a player was playing as a striker for Spartak Samarkand, a team in the third division of Soviet football. However, he had to stop playing at age 25 due to health problems.
After stopping his playing career, he moved into physical education and coaching. From 1970 to 1978, he worked for the football coaching sports committee in Turkmenistan. In 1979, he became an assistant coach for Kolhozchi Ashkhabad. By 1982, he became their head coach. In his first season, he led them to an eighth-place finish.
Coaching Cameroon's National Team
In 1984, Valery Nepomnyashchy was asked if he wanted to work abroad. He accepted and was meant to help developing countries with football training. He found these trips difficult to plan. Then, the Cameroon offered him a clear job. He thought he would coach a youth team. But the previous manager left, so there was an open spot for the senior head coach. Valery Nepomnyashchy took the job and signed a two-year contract.
At first, he struggled with the French language and needed an interpreter. But he soon managed to explain what he wanted his team to do. They then qualified for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. In the World Cup, they were in Group B. They surprised everyone by beating the defending champions, Argentina. They also beat Romania, which helped them reach the last 16 teams. After winning against Colombia 2-1 in extra-time, Cameroon finally lost to England in the Quarter-Finals. Valery Nepomnyashchy was offered a new contract, but he decided to leave. He took a new job as a technical consultant for the Chinese Football Association.
Coaching in Asia and Beyond
After his time with Cameroon, Valery Nepomnyashchy returned to coaching clubs. In the 1992–93 season, he managed the Turkish team Gençlerbirliği S.K.. The next season, he joined another Turkish team, Ankaragücü. After his time in Turkey, he moved to South Korea. There, he had a successful period with Bucheon Yukong. He won the 1996 Korean League Cup with them.
After South Korea, he returned to Russia in 1999 as a consultant for FC Dynamo Stavropol. Then, he went back to Asia. He managed several different clubs there. He later returned to coaching a national team when he led Uzbekistan. Before that, he coached one of Uzbekistan's clubs, Pakhtakor FK. He won the 2006 league title with them.
