Early Life and Beginnings
Valery Nepomnyashchy was born in Altai Krai, Soviet Union, during World War II. His mother, who was pregnant with him, had moved there from Moscow. This was after his father died during the war.
In 1947, Valery and his mother moved to what is now Turkmenistan. There, he began his youth football career. He later graduated from the Turkmen State University in 1969.
Playing and Coaching Career
Valery Nepomnyashchy started his career as a footballer. His biggest achievement as a player was playing as a striker for Spartak Samarkand, a third-tier Soviet football club. However, his playing career ended early due to health problems. He had to retire at just 25 years old.
After retiring from playing, he moved into physical education and coaching. From 1970 to 1978, he worked for the football coaching sports committee of Turkmenistan. In 1979, he became an assistant coach for Kolhozchi Ashkhabad. By 1982, he was named their head coach. In his first season, he led them to an eighth-place finish.
Coaching Cameroon's National Team
In 1984, Valery was asked if he wanted to work abroad. He accepted the offer, expecting to help developing countries with football training. These trips were often difficult to plan. However, the Cameroon team offered him a clear proposal.
Valery thought he would coach one of Cameroon's youth teams. But the previous manager, Claude Le Roy, left to join Senegal. This created an unexpected opening for the senior Head Coach position. Valery took the job and signed a two-year contract with the team.
At first, Valery struggled with the French language and needed an interpreter. But he eventually managed to communicate his ideas to the team. They then qualified for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
In the World Cup, Cameroon was in Group B. They surprised everyone by beating the defending champions, Argentina. They also beat Romania, which helped them reach the last 16 teams. Cameroon then beat Colombia 2-1 in extra-time. They finally lost to England in the Quarter-Finals. Valery was offered to stay longer, but he decided to leave after his contract ended. He took a new job as a technical consultant for the Chinese Football Association.
Coaching Around Asia
After his time with Cameroon, Valery Nepomnyashchy returned to club management. In the 1992–93 1.Lig season, he coached the Turkish team Gençlerbirliği S.K.. The next season, he joined another Turkish team, Ankaragücü.
After his time in Turkey, he moved to South Korea. There, he had a very successful period with Bucheon Yukong. He led them to win the 1996 Korean League Cup. After South Korea, he returned to Russia as a consultant for FC Dynamo Stavropol in 1999.
