A Look at Valley Grande's Past

Valley Grande includes the old community of Summerfield. This town started in 1819 and was first called "Valley Creek." In 1845, its name changed to "Summerfield." This was to honor a famous Methodist preacher named John Summerfield.

In 1829, the first school in Dallas County opened in Valley Creek. Later, in 1842, a co-ed college called the Methodist Centenary Institute opened. It was approved by the Alabama Legislature in 1841. Summerfield was a very rich community when cotton farming was popular. It had many planters, doctors, merchants, and teachers.

The old part of Summerfield is still mostly the same today. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special historical area. On January 9, 2003, the people of Valley Grande voted to become an official town. After a mayor and five council members were chosen, most of the Summerfield area joined Valley Grande.
