Luigi Bertelli (born March 19, 1858 – died November 27, 1920) was an Italian writer, artist, and journalist. He is much better known by his pen name, Vamba. He became famous for writing books for children.

Who Was Vamba?

Luigi Bertelli was born in Florence, Italy. After finishing his studies, he started working for the railway company. He worked in cities like Rimini and Foggia.

Becoming a Journalist

Later, Luigi Bertelli began writing for a newspaper in Rome called Capitan Fracassa. In 1884, he officially became a journalist. He also worked as a caricaturist, which means he drew funny pictures of people.

Soon after, he started using the pen name "Vamba." He got this name from a clown character in a famous book. The book was Ivanhoe by Walter Scott.

Starting New Newspapers

Vamba worked with several newspapers. In 1890, he started his own newspaper called L'O di Giotto. This newspaper shared strong opinions on political ideas. In 1901, he helped create another local newspaper called Il Bruscolo.

Writing for Children

Vamba is best known for his books for young readers. In 1893, he wrote his first teaching story, Ciondolino. This book aimed to teach children important lessons.

In 1906, Vamba started a special magazine for children. It was called Il giornalino della Domenica. He managed this magazine until 1911. In this magazine, he published his most famous story. It was called Il Giornalino di Gian Burrasca.

Gian Burrasca's Adventures

Il Giornalino di Gian Burrasca was released in parts, like a TV show. It told the funny and educational story of a lively 9-year-old boy. The story became very popular with children.

Vamba's Later Years

In the summer of 1920, Vamba became ill. He passed away on November 27, 1920, in Florence.

Remembering Vamba

A special monument was built in Florence to honor Vamba. It was made by the sculptor Libero Andreotti. The monument was officially opened on January 14, 1923. It helps people remember his important work.
