In 2020, about 2,822 people lived in Vamo. This was a decrease from 4,727 people counted in 2010. Vamo is part of a larger area called the North Port–Bradenton–Sarasota, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The size of Vamo has changed over time. In 2010, the total area was about 4.9 square kilometers (or 1.9 square miles). Most of this was land (3.8 square kilometers or 1.5 square miles). About 1.0 square kilometer (0.4 square miles) was water, which was about 21% of its total size.
By 2020, the total area of Vamo became smaller. It was about 2.84 square kilometers (1.1 square miles). The land area was 2.02 square kilometers (0.78 square miles). The water area was 0.83 square kilometers (0.32 square miles), making up about 29% of the total.

How Vamo Began
The Webb family founded Vamo in 1928. They built the very first home in the area. This home was located on the Sarasota Bay Inlet, near what is now called Vamo Drive. The neighborhood is well-known for its beautiful homes built in a historic Spanish style.
The Unique Name "Vamo"
The name "Vamo" comes from the home states of Mr. and Mrs. Webb. Mrs. Webb was from Virginia, which is often shortened to "VA." Mr. Webb was from Missouri, often shortened to "MO." Put them together, and you get "Vamo"! There's even a street in the neighborhood named "Mova Street," which is "Vamo" spelled backward.
