Van is a small, unincorporated community located in Harney County, Oregon, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Van sits in the beautiful Wolf Creek Valley. It is about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Burns, along the Van–Drewsey Road.
A Bit of History
Van got its name from a local settler named Van Middlesworth. A post office was opened here in 1891. This post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1953.
For a while, the former United States Forest Service Van Guard Station was for sale. This station was likely used by forest rangers.
Climate
What's the Weather Like?
Van has a type of weather called a semi-arid climate. On climate maps, this is often shown as "BSk." A semi-arid climate means the area gets very little rain. It's usually dry, but not as dry as a desert. You might find grasslands or shrubs growing here.
