History of Vandemere
Vandemere is located where Vandemere Creek flows into the Bay River. The town became official in 1874. It was the main town, or county seat, of Pamlico County from 1872 to 1876.
Many families living in Vandemere today are descendants of the first people who settled in North Carolina. Their family names and even some place names in the area still show these early connections.
Early Settlers and Treaties
In 1699, a peace agreement was made between the English Crown and the "Bay River Indians." Early settlers in the area mainly came from England. However, there were also reports of French Huguenots, Dutch, and Flemish people settling there.
By the 1700s, there were written records of some European people living in the Vandemere area. Records also show that a Native American group lived "at the head of Vandemore's Creek." These old records show the name "Vandemere" spelled in different ways. Most of these spellings suggest the name came from Dutch or Flemish origins.
For example, records from as early as 1679 show a "Tho. Vandermoller" as a witness to a will. In 1882, a land record mentions a "Jno. Vandemore."
Recent Events and Changes
On August 27, 2011, a big flood hit Vandemere. This flood was caused by Hurricane Irene. The hurricane badly damaged over 100 homes in the town. Local builders helped to fix and even build new houses. After the hurricane, officials made new rules for building in flood-prone areas. These rules require things like higher electrical outlets and houses built on raised foundations to prevent future damage.
