Vanessa Chester was born on July 2, 1984, in Brooklyn, New York City. Her parents came to the United States from Guyana. When she was young, Vanessa and her mom moved to Los Angeles, California. There, she began trying out for acting jobs and appeared in TV commercials.

Vanessa's first movie was the comedy CB4 in 1993. In 1995, she had a supporting role in the movie A Little Princess. This film was directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
In 1996, she played Janie Gibbs in the Nickelodeon film Harriet the Spy. She acted alongside Michelle Trachtenberg in this movie. Harriet the Spy was quite popular at the box office.
The next year, Vanessa got a main role as Kelly in Steven Spielberg's The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). She played the daughter of Ian Malcolm, who was played by Jeff Goldblum. This movie was a huge success, earning over $600 million around the world!
