How the Walk Began
This special walking path was created in 1980. It celebrated the 15th birthday of the Vanguards Rambling Club. This club got its name from a funny story! Once, they had to ride in the guard's van of a crowded train because there was no other space.
The Vanguard Way officially opened on May 3, 1981. The Vanguards Rambling Club still looks after the path today. They make sure it's a great place for everyone to enjoy a long walk.
Connecting with Other Paths
The Vanguard Way is like a central hub for walkers! In Croydon, it connects with the Wandle Trail. This trail follows the River Wandle and can take you further into central London.
Some people even use the Vanguard Way as part of a longer walk between London and Paris! They walk to the south coast, then catch a ferry.
This path also links up with many other well-known walking routes. These include the London Outer Orbital Path, the North Downs Way, the Greensand Way, the London Countryway, the Eden Valley Walk, the Forest Way, the Wealdway, the Sussex Border Path, and the South Downs Way.
