Vansbro is a small town in Dalarna County, Sweden. It is the main town of Vansbro Municipality. In 2010, about 2,026 people lived in Vansbro. The whole municipality had around 7,000 residents.
This town sits where the Van River, also called Vanån, meets the Västerdal River. The Van River is the main river that flows into the Västerdal River.
Vansbro's Past
The town of Vansbro was first written about in the early 1700s. A famous scientist named Carl von Linné mentioned it. Around the same time, other writings called the place "Wahnbro" or "Wansbro."
People believe the name Vansbro comes from a bridge. This bridge was built across the Vanå river.
A railway line was built through Vansbro in 1890. This railway connected the towns of Kristinehamn and Mora. The Vansbro railway station was built when the line opened.
Local Businesses
In the past, Vansbro's main businesses were all about wood. This included cutting down trees and processing timber. The very first sawmill in the area was called Danielssågen. It started working soon after the railway was built.
More sawmills opened in the years that followed. Dalasågen, which was the biggest sawmill in Sweden at the time, opened in 1892. Another sawmill, Brosågen, started in 1893.
Fun Events in Vansbro
Vansbro is famous for an event called Vansbrosimningen. This means "The Vansbro Swim." It is a swimming competition that happens every year.
The first Vansbro Swim took place in 1950. In this race, swimmers go 2,000 meters in the Van River. Then, they swim another 1,000 meters in the Västerdal River.
