About Vantage Pointe
Vantage Pointe is a large residential building in San Diego. It stands between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, and A and B Streets. At 41 stories tall, it is one of the largest buildings in the downtown area. Only the Pinnacle West Tower is taller, by about 60 feet.
What is a Condominium?
A condominium, often called a "condo," is a type of home ownership. When you buy a condo, you own your specific apartment unit. However, you also share ownership of the common areas with other residents. These common areas might include hallways, lobbies, gyms, or swimming pools. Everyone living in the building helps pay for the upkeep of these shared spaces.
Why Was it Criticized?
Some experts who study buildings, called architect critics, had some concerns about Vantage Pointe. They felt the building did not have a "human-scale relationship at street level." This means that the ground floor of the building, where people walk by, did not feel welcoming or friendly. It might have seemed too big or not connected to the street.
Because of this, the San Diego Architectural Foundation gave the building a special award. This award was called the "Grand Onion." It is given to buildings that are considered to have poor design or do not fit well with their surroundings.
