Vasili Yakovlevich Zinger facts for kids
Vasili Yakovlevich Zinger (born February 11, 1836, died March 2, 1907) was a very smart Russian scientist. He was known for his work in three main areas: mathematics, which is the study of numbers and shapes; botany, which is the study of plants; and philosophy, which is about big ideas and how we think. Sometimes, his name is spelled Wasili Jakowlewitsch Zinger.
Zinger's Life Story
Vasili Zinger was born in Moscow, Russia. His father was a mathematics teacher, so maybe that's where Vasili got his love for numbers!
In 1859, Zinger finished his studies at Moscow University. He focused on mathematics there. Later, in 1867, he earned his highest degree, called a doctoral degree, which means he became an expert in his field.
Vasili Zinger was a very active member of the Moscow Mathematical Society. This was a group for mathematicians in Moscow. He even became the president of this society for five years, from 1886 to 1891. Besides his science work, he also wrote some essays about philosophical ideas.
Zinger's Love for Plants
Even though he was a brilliant mathematician, Zinger also had a great interest in plants! He was a botanist, which is a scientist who studies plants. He wrote several books and papers about the different kinds of plants found in central Russia.
To honor his important work in botany, a special type of grass was named after him. This grass is called Zingeria and it belongs to the Poaceae family, which is the family of grasses.
