Vastus is a small place in southern Missouri. It's located in Butler County. Vastus is known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
You can find Vastus along Missouri Route H. It's about five miles west of a town called Neelyville. To the east, about 3.5 miles away, is the Black River. The border between Missouri and Arkansas is also close, just 3.5 miles to the south.
The Story of Vastus
Vastus got its name from a Latin word meaning "great." Imagine, a place named "Great"! A post office opened here way back in 1891. It helped people send and receive letters for many years. But it closed down in 1927.
Weather in Vastus
The weather in Vastus is usually warm and wet. Summers are hot and humid, meaning the air feels sticky. Winters are generally mild, not too cold, but can be cool. This type of weather is called a humid subtropical climate. On climate maps, you might see it labeled as "Cfa." This is part of the Köppen Climate Classification system, which helps scientists describe climates around the world.
