Early Baseball Days
Vaughn Grissom went to Paul J. Hagerty High School in Oviedo, Florida. He played baseball there with his teammate, Riley Greene, who is also a professional baseball player. In his final year of high school in 2019, Vaughn had a great batting average of .389. This means he got a hit almost 39% of the times he tried to hit the ball.
After high school, the Atlanta Braves picked him in the 11th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft. He decided to sign with the Braves and start his professional career instead of playing college baseball at Florida International University.
Playing in the Pros
Starting with the Atlanta Braves
Vaughn Grissom began his professional journey with the Gulf Coast League Braves, which is a team for new players. He hit .288 and had three home runs and 23 RBIs (Runs Batted In) in 44 games. RBIs mean he helped his teammates score runs.
In 2020, he didn't play any minor league games because the season was canceled. In 2021, he played for the Augusta GreenJackets and then moved up to the Rome Braves. These are both minor league teams. That year, he had a batting average of .319, hit seven home runs, and stole 16 bases.
Vaughn started the 2022 season back with the Rome Braves. In July, he was promoted to the Mississippi Braves, a Double-A team. He played very well there, hitting .363 in 22 games before getting called up to the major leagues.
On August 10, 2022, the Atlanta Braves brought Vaughn up to the big leagues because another player, Orlando Arcia, was injured. Vaughn made his MLB debut that night as the starting second baseman against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. He had an amazing first game, getting two hits, including a two-run home run over the famous Green Monster wall. He also stole a base. At 21 years old, Vaughn became the youngest player in the American or National League to hit a home run and steal a base in his very first MLB game.
In 2023, after Dansby Swanson left the Braves, Vaughn had a chance to become the team's main shortstop. He competed with Orlando Arcia and Braden Shewmake during spring training. However, on March 20, Vaughn was sent to the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers team, and Arcia became the starting shortstop.
Moving to the Boston Red Sox
On December 30, 2023, the Braves traded Vaughn Grissom to the Boston Red Sox. In return, the Braves received pitcher Chris Sale.
During spring training in 2024, Vaughn had a groin strain, which meant he couldn't start the regular season right away. He was activated from the injured list on May 3 and made his Red Sox debut. On June 1, Vaughn had to leave a game early because he strained his hamstring. In 31 games with Boston, he had a batting average of .190, with six RBIs and two stolen bases.
Vaughn was sent to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox team to start the 2025 season.
