A Look at History

Vega Redonda, like all of Puerto Rico, has an interesting history. After the Spanish–American War ended, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.

Becoming a U.S. Territory

After the treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.

Early Population Count

In 1899, the United States government took a census in Puerto Rico. This was to count how many people lived there. The census found that Vega Redonda and a nearby barrio called Piñas had a combined population of 1,373 people.
