Veniero's Pasticceria & Caffé is a famous Italian bakery in New York City. It first opened its doors in 1894. You can find this sweet spot at 342 East 11th Street. It's located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan.
A Sweet History
Veniero's was started by Antonio Veniero. He came from a town called Sorrento in Italy. When he first opened his shop, it was a place to play pool and enjoy coffee. But Antonio also served his amazing baked goods. People loved his pastries and cakes so much!
His desserts even won awards. He received honors in Rome and Bologna, Italy. He also won an award at the New York World's Fair. That's a big deal!
The bakery has always been owned by the Veniero family. They have kept it going strong for over 125 years. In 1984, they made the shop even bigger. They added a cozy area with beautiful stained-glass panels. The original pressed tin ceiling is still there too.
Pasticceria is an Italian word. It means "cake shop" or "confectioner's shop."
Delicious Desserts
Veniero's is famous for its many traditional Italian sweets. They make everything by hand. You can find delicious confections there.
Some popular treats include:
- Handmade Italian butter cookies
- Biscotti
- Cannoli
- Sfogliatelle
- Tiramisù
- Their famous New York style cheesecake
They even offer modern options now. You can find carb-free cheesecakes and sugar-free cookies.
Veniero's in the Media
This famous bakery has been featured on many TV shows. It appeared on Food Network's Road Tasted. It was also on ABC's Good Morning America. You might have seen it on Live with Regis and Kelly too.
The bakery has also been a filming location. Scenes for NBC's Law & Order were shot there. It was also in an episode of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm. In that funny episode, the main character used the bakery's hard Italian bread in a silly way.
Awards and Recognition
In 2010, Veniero's won a special award. AOL's City's Best website named it the winner for "Best Desserts" in New York City. Many food tour companies also include Veniero's on their tours. This lets visitors taste their amazing treats.
