Venkatesh Prasad, born on August 5, 1969, is a famous Indian cricket player. He was a right-arm medium-fast bowler. He played for India in both Test matches and One Day Internationals (ODIs). Prasad was well-known for his bowling partnership with Javagal Srinath. He was also part of the Indian team that finished second in the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy.

After his playing career, Prasad became a cricket coach. He worked as the bowling coach for the Indian cricket team from 2007 to 2009. He also coached teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Today, he works as a General Manager for Canara Bank.

Early Life and Education

Venkatesh Prasad studied engineering at MSRIT. He also earned a special certificate from the University of London. These studies helped him prepare for life beyond cricket.

Playing for India: International Cricket

Venkatesh Prasad was a key bowler for India. He took 96 wickets in 33 Test matches. He also got 196 wickets in 161 One Day Internationals. He was especially good on pitches that helped fast bowlers.

Memorable Moments in Cricket

One of his best performances was against Pakistan in 1999. He took 6 wickets for only 33 runs in a Test match in Chennai. During this game, he took 5 wickets without giving away any runs!

In December 1996, he took 10 wickets in a Test match in Durban, South Africa. This was his only time taking 10 wickets in a Test match. He also took 5 wickets in a single innings in England (1996), Sri Lanka (2001), and the West Indies (1997).

Awards and Recognition

In the 1996-1997 cricket season, Prasad took many wickets. He got 55 wickets in 15 Test matches and 48 wickets in 30 ODIs. Because of his great performance, he was named the CEAT International Cricketer of the Year. He also received the Arjuna Award in 2000, which is a big honor for athletes in India.

Famous World Cup Moment

A very famous moment for Venkatesh Prasad happened during the 1996 Cricket World Cup. A Pakistani batsman, Aamir Sohail, hit Prasad for a boundary and then teased him. On the very next ball, Prasad bowled Sohail out! This was a huge moment that helped India win the match. Prasad was also known for using a special type of delivery called a "slow leg cutter."

Injuries and Retirement

Towards the end of his career, Venkatesh Prasad faced challenges with injuries. His performance also started to dip. He played his last Test match in Sri Lanka in 2001. After that, he was not selected for the Indian team.

Prasad tried to make a comeback but decided to retire from all forms of cricket in May 2005. Before retiring, he helped his state team, Karnataka, win the Ranji Trophy championship twice.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Venkatesh Prasad became a cricket coach.

Coaching the Indian Team

In May 2007, he was appointed as the bowling coach for the Indian team. This was after the team's disappointing performance in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. He coached the team for about two years. In October 2009, he left this role.

Coaching in the IPL

Prasad also coached teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was the coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first season in 2008. Later, in 2018, he worked as the bowling coach for Kings XI Punjab.
