Venkatesh Prasad, born on August 5, 1969, is a famous Indian cricketer. He was a right-arm fast bowler who played for India in Test matches and One Day Internationals (ODIs). He was well-known for his great bowling partnership with Javagal Srinath. He also helped India reach the finals of the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy.
After his playing career, Prasad became a cricket coach and commentator. He worked as the bowling coach for the Indian cricket team from 2007 to 2009. He also coached the Kings XI Punjab team in the Indian Premier League.

Early Life & Education
Venkatesh Prasad studied engineering at MSRIT. He also earned a special certificate from the University of London.
Playing for India
Venkatesh Prasad was a very successful bowler for India. He took 96 wickets in 33 Test matches. He also took 196 wickets in 161 One Day Internationals. He was especially good on pitches that helped fast bowlers.
Memorable Bowling Moments
One of his best performances was against Pakistan in 1999 in Chennai. He took 6 wickets for only 33 runs. In that match, he had an amazing spell where he took 5 wickets without giving away any runs!
In December 1996, he took 10 wickets in a single Test match in Durban, South Africa. This was a huge achievement for him. He also took many wickets in matches in England, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.
Awards & Recognition
In the 1996-1997 season, Prasad took 55 wickets in Test matches and 48 wickets in ODIs. Because of his great performance, he was named the CEAT International Cricketer of the Year. In 2000, he received the Arjuna Award, which is a big honor for athletes in India.
Famous World Cup Moment
A very famous moment in his career happened during the 1996 Cricket World Cup. A Pakistani batsman, Aamir Sohail, hit Prasad for a boundary and then said something to him. On the very next ball, Prasad bowled Sohail out! This moment was a key turning point in the match and helped India win. Prasad was also known for his "slow leg cutters," a special type of delivery.
Later Career & Retirement
Towards the end of his playing career, Venkatesh Prasad faced some injuries. His performance also started to dip. He played his last Test match in Sri Lanka in 2001.
He tried to make a comeback to the Indian team but was not successful. In May 2005, he officially retired from all forms of cricket. Before retiring, he helped his state team, Karnataka, win two Ranji Trophy championships.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Venkatesh Prasad became a cricket coach.
- In January 2006, he became the coach of the India Under-19 Cricket team. He led them to finish as runners-up in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup.
- After the 2007 Cricket World Cup, he was appointed as the bowling coach for the main Indian team. He coached the team until October 2009.
- He also coached the Royal Challengers Bangalore team in the Indian Premier League in 2008.
- In 2018, he worked as the bowling coach for Kings XI Punjab.
Personal Life
Venkatesh Prasad's mother tongue is Kannada. He is married to Jayanthi.
